Bringing Dreams To Life
Can you identify the singular origin of an idea? What was the seed of the bloom?
We say ideas just come to us, but I believe bits & pieces float around until they form something whole that comes into consciousness. That's how my first fashion editorial shoot came to be.
October 2021
I got the vision to use Billy Balls for hair accessories a.k.a Bobo's a.k.a clackers a.k.a hair knockers a.k.a ballies.
I tested the look out for Halloween.
July 2022
I began experimenting with weaving techniques using beargrass.
September 2022
My initial idea to create a weaved bikini for an event went left.
I repurposed the piece into a necklace to honor the work I put into it, but I was plotting on a way to use the weaved textile properly.
I had just gotten back from doing my first floral fashion exhibit at Music x Flowers. The weaved bikini was supposed to be a part of my installation until I realized I bought the wrong plant material — turns out bear grass and lily grass are not interchangeable.
While riding the high of creative exhilaration, I was craving another opportunity to push myself as an artist.
As I was journaling that night, all the elements floating around in my imagination over the last year interlaced like the woven grasses. I quickly sketched the vision and entered into a creative flow. It was so clear — bamboo earrings, hair balls, a bubble ponytail, a woven top and cargos. It felt so 90’s yet the weaving took me further back to ancestral techniques. “Take Me There” from The Rugrats Movie soundtrack played in my mind - if you’re an early 90’s kid, you get it.
I had dreamt of creating fashion editorials since I was a little girl reading Vogue with my sister. It only took me 20 years to realize I could create my own. Bridging my current artistic abilities with the imagination of my inner child led to my proudest work. It integrated so many things I love: flora, fashion, photography, creative direction, collaboration, being Black.
What has your inner child been waiting for you to create?
